Logbook vs Fitbod: AI tells you what to lift, or you decide and Logbook remembers?

Fitbod tells you what to train next, generating adaptive workouts from your recovery, equipment and goals, drawing on data from 15M+ downloads by Fitbod's own figure. It's subscription-first: a 7-day trial, then $15.99/mo or $95.99/yr (USD, August 2026), with no permanent free tier. Logbook works the other way around: you decide what to train, Logbook records what happened, and the history compounds. Logging, history, PRs and clubs are free; Pro is optional. Pick Fitbod if you want a coach app that programs for you. Pick Logbook if you bring your own programming and want the cleanest record of executing it.

On the currencies: Logbook is priced in NZD and AUD above because New Zealand and Australia are our main markets, with USD in brackets. Fitbod publishes US App Store pricing, so that is what their column shows. Don't read the two columns as a direct price comparison: compare the USD figures, or check Fitbod in your own App Store storefront.

Prices and features change. Everything above about Fitbod comes from their own published information, checked on . Check their pages before you decide, and tell us if we've got something wrong and we'll correct it.

Two opposing answers to the same question

Fitbod and Logbook answer the same question, 'what should I lift today?', from opposite ends.

Fitbod's answer: an algorithm that knows your training history, recovery state and goals will program a better session than you will. Open the app, follow the plan, get strong. For someone without a program, that's real value.

Logbook's answer: a lot of serious lifters already have a program, written by them, by a coach, or pulled from a book. The app's job isn't to second-guess it. The job is to make today's session fast to log and every previous session easy to read back.

Both are legitimate. They're for different lifters at different points in their training, and the honest way to choose is to ask whether you want to be told what to do.

What Logbook's AI does and doesn't do

Logbook has an AI Coach, and it is not a workout generator. It's a chat assistant with context on your training history, useful for questions about what you've been doing and what to adjust. It's capped: 5 messages a day on the free tier, 25 a day on Pro. Anyone selling you 'unlimited AI' should show you the meter.

We're not building AI-generated programming for v1.0. Doing it well needs either real coaching expertise or a very large training dataset, and Fitbod has the second. We'd rather ship a coaching partnership or a smarter template system than a generic generator dressed up as one.

When Fitbod is the right pick

If you're new to lifting, don't have a program, and want the app to tell you what to do, Fitbod is genuinely useful. The generator does a reasonable job of progressive overload and of not hammering the same muscle group twice in a row. For beginners and intermediates who don't want to design their own training, that's real value, and Logbook doesn't do it at all.

Logbook is for

Self-coached lifters who follow their own program and want a serious training record.

FAQ

I don't have a program. Should I still use Logbook?
Only if you want to build one yourself over time: our templates and per-exercise progress are designed for that. If you want the app to hand you today's session, Fitbod is the better fit and we'd rather you didn't waste the download.
Will Logbook ever generate workouts for me?
Not in 1.0. Beyond that we're not committing to a date or a design. If it happens it will come from a coaching partnership or from your own templates getting smarter, not from a generic generator.
Can I cancel Fitbod and bring my history over?
Fitbod can export your workout history as a CSV from its settings, so getting your data out is straightforward. Getting it into Logbook is manual today: there's no importer yet.
